Please provide a statement about your personal history and your
intellectual development. This statement can include a discussion of educati
onal and cultural opportunities (or lack of them), family background, specia
l interests and abilities, and future goals. Please note that this statement
should not duplicate the Statement of Purpose (Form F). If more space is ne

n or profession, and any additional information that may assist the selectio
n committee in evaluating your preparation and aptitude for graduate study a

enable you to complete a graduate degree program.
2.Caltech
Provide on a separate sheet of paper a brief statement of your scientific an
d professional interests and objectives. Include a description of
your past accomplishments that are not evident from the examination of other
documents submitted. Report, if applicable, on any
research in progress. List memberships in scientific, professional, or honor
ary societies. This statement must be written in English by the
applicant. It must not be written in another language and translated for the
applicant by another person.
3.CMU
Statement of Purpose—On a separate sheet of paper, type or print a one- or
two-page
concise statement that includes the following information:
1. A brief statement of your primary educational and research interests
2. An outline of your research experience and a list of any publications
3. A description of your background in engineering and allied fields that is
particularly relevant to your objectives—include any relevant industrial
or work experience and any academic honors
4. NOTE to Engineering and Public Policy, Civil and Environmental Engineerin
g, and Mechanical Engineering applicants: To the extent possible, please
discuss specific research topics and methods you might pursue in your
thesis research.

4.Cornell Statement of purpose
A detailed (one- to two-page) statement, preferably printed on white paper,
should include your reasons for undertaking graduate work, as well as an
explanation of your study and research interests and their relation to your
undergraduate study and professional goals. Your full name and the major
field of study to which you are applying should be includedat the top of
each page.
5.Duke
Statement of Purpose and Educational Objectives
Write a statement indicating your purposes and objectives in undertaking gra
duate study, your special interests and plans, and your strengths and weakne
sses in your chosen field.
If you have particular reasons for applying to Duke, please indicate these.
If you have communicated with a department or any member of the faculty abou
t your graduate study, please name the department or person.
Also, if you have attended more than the usual number of colleges or have ea
rned a master's degree elsewhere, give the reasons for your change.
On your attachment please indicate your first name, last name and proposed d
epartment on the top of every page.
6.Gatech
The applicant must clearly indicate the reasons for wishing to study in this
program at Georgia Tech as opposed to some other program or university. The
statement of purpose should describe the applicant's academic background, t
raining and experience and should mention honors, memberships, and extracurr
icular activities. Areas of research interest should be discussed. If extra
space is needed, please use the reverse side of this form.
7.JHU
Use the space below to tell us anything you would like us to know about your
future goals and how graduate study at Johns Hopkins would help to
achieve those goals.
8.Minnesota

Statement of Objectives
Please read instructions carefully before you complete this form.
Please give your reasons for wishing to do graduate work in the field you
have chosen. Prepare your statement of objectives and goals in whatever form
clearly presents your views. Include as far as you can, your particular inte
rests, be they experimental, theoretical, or issue-oriented, and show how
your background and MIT’s programs support these interests. The statement
could be much like a proposal for graduate studies, in the more specific con
text of your professional objectives. You should set forth the issues and
problems you wish to address. Explain your longer-term professional goals.
The Admissions Committee will welcome any factors you wish to bring to
its attention concerning your academic and work experience to date.
Type or print using black ink.
Use reverse side if necessary or separate form.
Keep a copy for your file. You may also wish to provide copies to your
evaluators before they complete their forms.
Return this form with the completed application to the appropriate
MIT department (see Book 1).

Personal Statement:
Attach a separate sheet stating your plans for graduate study and your profe
ssional career. List any academic honors,
distinctions, scholarships you have earned (including graduate assistantship
s held), memberships in professional organizations and any other
pertinent professional activities. Be as specific as possible.
11.Northwestern
Statement of Purpose
Your statement of purpose is an important part of your application. Program
admissions committees consider them carefully in ranking applicants. Be as s
pecific as possible about your research interests and qualifications. If you
have particular reasons for choosing Northwestern, be sure to indicate them
. Indicate any awards or honors you may have earned, publications you may ha
ve authored or any pertinent research or work experience. This should be a
5,000 character document or about one-page long.
If you use the on-line application, the statement is submitted electronicall
y as part of the on-line application.
Applicants using the paper application should submit TWO copies of this one-
page statement as instructed in the paper application. However, if you find
you need a second page, please also list your identification on any subseque
nt page. Be sure that your identification - name US Social Security number (
if applicable) and the program to which you are applying - are listed below
the title.
12.OSU
Statement of Intent
On a separate sheet of paper, provide a one-page
statement of your academic goals. Include information
concerning your interest in and motivations
for graduate work. You may wish to
include autobiographical or personal data which
may be helpful to the Graduate Studies Committee
in considering your application. Some graduate
programs provide specific guidelines for
what should be included in the applicant’s statement
of intent.
13.Purdue
Statement of Purpose
A statement of purpose is required for all degree-seeking applicants. Please
submit a statement of approximately 300-500 words concerning your purpose f
or undertaking or continuing graduate study, your reasons for wanting to stu
dy at Purdue, and your professional plans, career goals, and research intere
sts. You also may explain any irregularities or special circumstances applic
able to your background and elaborate on your special abilities, awards, ach
ievements, scholarly publications, and/or professional history.
14.Stanford
Statement of Purpose: The statement of purpose should describe succinctly
your reasons for applying to the proposed program at Stanford, your
preparation for this field of study, study and research interests, future
career plans, and other aspects of your background and interests which may
aid the admissions committee in evaluating
your aptitude and motivation for graduate study. Include the statement of pu
rpose with your application.
15.TAMU
Career Objective
This section MUST be completed. Attach a statement describing your special f
ield of interest and the objectives of your
educational program and professional career. Your essay should be typed and
no longer than two pages. Put your full name and
social security number at the top of each page.
16.UCLA
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Please state your purpose in applying for graduate study, your particular ar
ea of specialization within the major field, your plans for future
occupation or profession, and any additional information that may aid the se
lection committee in evaluating your preparation and your
aptitude for graduate study at UCLA. Attach an additional sheet if necessary
. If you have submitted a statement of purpose as part of
a separate application to a professional school you need not write an additi
onal statement here.
17.UCSD
Please state your purpose in applying for graduate study, your particular ar
ea of specialization within the major field, and any additional information
that may aid the selection committee in evaluating your preparation and
potential for graduate study at UCSD. Describe your plans for future
occupation or profession after graduate study. If your department requires
a separate Statement of Purpose as part of its supplementary application
materials, DO NOT COMPLETE THIS FORM. Please note that the Department of
Computer Science and Engineering limits the Statement of Purpose to one
page.
18.UIUC
Attach a one-page statement concerning your previous academic work in your p
roposed or allied fields of study,including coursework,other educational exp
eriences,teaching or other relevant employment,publications,and your plans f
or graduate study and a professional acreer. If you are currently in graduat
e or undergraduate study,please list those courses which you plan to complet
e before enrolling in the Graduate College of UIUC.

PART I
Write a brief statement concerning your reasons for undertaking graduate stu

at you feel have prepared you to pursue a graduate
degree at a large, diverse institution such as the University of Maryland. A

and family background, whether you are the first person
in your family to pursue a higher education, or any other factors that you f
eel would contribute to the diversity of our academic
community. Finally, give us some examples of your determination to pursue yo
ur goals, your initiative and ability to develop ideas,
