I don't think you have anything to worry about.  When officers believe that
individuals have studied in "sensitive areas" they may choose to do
background checks.  This usually involves checking FBI and CIA files, to see
if they have a record on you and if there is anything to be concerned about.
 If not, you should obtain your visa after the check is done.

I recommend that you wait the time they told you it would take to do a
check, and then proceed from there.

There is nothing I can do to speed up the background check.
