1)What will you study in the United States?
Biomedical Sciences
2) special
Cardiovascular Sciences :It is devoted to the study of cellular and molecula
r mechanisms associated with cardiovascular function and mechanism of cardio
vascular diseases. Such as Na+K+ATPase (it is very useful in our ordinary li
fe. If we can understand the secret of Cardiovascular diseases, we can find
the best way for diseases prevention and therapy. I want to know the cause o
f hypertension, and find the way to prevent it or cure it. Maybe from the ge
ne therapy or from the receptors form change. Many people can benefit from t
his research.)
In which area will you concentrate your study?
m:As a PhD student,I might be able to concentrate my study in the area of Me
mbranes and Ca Metabolism, Drug, Hormone and Neurotransmitter Receptors, or
Blood Pressure and Hypertension.. The faculties in have very diverse resear
ch interests, I might be able to work with one of them.
**** Can you say something about it?
What is it all about? What is it for?
Pharmacology is the fascinating science of drugs. It is a science that spans
the most fundamental aspects of basic research, including structural and de
velopmental biology, through transgenic models to clinical investigation. It
includes the study of the biological targets of drug action, the mechanisms
by which drugs act, the mechanisms through which signals are recognized and
transduced by cells, the therapeutic and side effects of drugs, optimizatio
n of therapeutic regimens, as well as the development of new therapeutic dru
gs. And Pharmacology uses the basic concepts of biology and chemistry to det
ermine how drugs affect organisms.
G-protein coupled receptors reside on the plasma membrane and are activated
by diverse extracellular stimuli, including hormones and neurotransmitters
3)why do you change your major? "You are going to study for PhD degree, why
do you choose
Basically Cardiovascular is an interdisciplinary program. Thus all the speci
fic techniques of basic "classical" Biomedical Sciences such as Pharmacology
, Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Physiology, etc., are well repre
sented in research. Many experiment skills and methods are the same in Biome
dical Sciences such as PCR, Western Blotting, Northern Blotting, electrophor
esis, purify protein, DNA sequencing and so on. Just the specific field is d
ifferent. Even in one department, the specific is also different. From the G
PCRS to nerutransmitters .So I think that my background fits the program ver
y well. (Indeed, all of Baylor faculty have appointments in at least one of
the basic science departments of the school. Fulfillment of a goal of develo
pment of understanding of cardiovascular disease requires a broad approach c
onsisting of both basic and directed aspects of research..)
4) What is your major? In what aspect of your major will you study?
Pharmacology. Biomedical
14) What is your plan? What will you do after graduation?
What do you plan to do when you go back?
I will come back to china, I can go to Bayer pharmaceutical company get a ve
ry good position. You know, my major is new hot in china. And Beijing now is
developing the high-technology such as IT, Bio-pharmaceutical. And I have a
lab mate. She is now manager of Bayer. I have a very good relationship with
her. I also did some part-time jobs in Bayer. And they are very satisfied w
ith my ability. The managers appreciate me very much. So I can get the posit
ion of General Support Offer very easily when I am back china with Ph.D. of
USA. I can learn some experiences that will do help me in creating my own co
mpany.
If possible, After I have enough money and experience, I will set up my own
company to design targeted-Cardiovascular drugs and other new drugs. The sal
es amount is estimated up to one hundred million RMB.
Janserson. Or MSD. Merck Or high-tech company such as Tsinghua ziguang.
还要注意他会问你你想去的学校现在的规模怎么样,有几位教授了。他今天就这样问我
I will go to the lab of professor Chengjing's, former CTO of AVIVA Bio Corp,
USA. He has four companies now, and the total invest amount of one hundred
million dollars. I have a friend who is now in chengjing's lab. He told me t
hat his advisor invited five researchers from USA and paid them six hundred
thousand per year. And I also talked with Professor Cheng jing. He appreciat
e me very much. He is very happy to extend offer to me when I am back china.
If I join his group, he promises that he will give me the original stock. T
he company will issue the stock within four years. You know, the market shar
e of gene chip is estimated about nine thousand million in china. One functi
on of gene chip is to locate the target of drugs. It certainly includes the
Cardiovascular Drugs. His lab also needs the researchers whose major are Bio
medical Sciences especially with USA background. I know that his lab admitte
d some student of Biomedical Sciences.
He is the Chief Scientist of dialogue between Chinese and American Scientist
s. And he is senior consultant of premier Zhu Rong Ji.
( This is the introduction of Professor Cheng jing Do you want to see it?)
VO打破沙锅问到底, 还问他要开公司没有钱怎么办
I can make some money in big company first. And if I have a promising projec
ts, I am not worried about the money because there are many venture capital
to look for good projects.
So itcan provide many attracting opportunity for the student back from USA.
Did you know Beijing build the area of ZGC high-technology with policy of ta
x? So more and more students come back from USA. I believe that I can gain m
ore success in china personally. Many people have gain great success in chin
a. For example, Mr. Cheng Jing of Tsinghua University,
You know, one of our lab is the manager of Bayer. Her salary is two hundred
thousand one year. I always talk with her about future and career plan. And
she told me that now there are good situations in china and after the china
enters WTO, there will be more and more chance.
Two or three of my collegues came back from
the university and they got a high position and good salary. I think that is
also good for me if I get one degree from the university. You know an Ameri
can degree is very helpful now in China.
If you can not find a job....(两三句话 实在记不清了)
D: (连贯且理直气壮)My research field is under increasingly developing in
China. There are a lot of vacancies. I don't believe I can not find such a j
ob. It is easy!
1. Why didn't you go to US last year?
At that time, I didn't finish my preparation. After I finished my diploma th
esis, I want to do further research about it. And I found that our lab could
not afford a DNA sequencer which was necessary for me to continue my work.
But it was late to apply for the graduate programs beginning in the fall, 20
00. I discussed my situation with my advisor. My advisor encouraged me to pu
rsue my Ph.D. in US this year. So I decided to study in US this year.
8. How much can you earn? (Can you earn so much?)
About 20,000 yuan per month. With my Ph.D. got in US, I can find a good job
in China.
7). *** Where are you working (doing) now?
What is the unit you are currently working in China?
**** What are you working on?
**** What have you been doing after graduation?
I am working as a research assistant in the center of Molecular Pharmacology
of Peking University.. Of course it is not a formal job because I don't wan
t to disobey the contract. I don't want to get formal work because I must si
gn a contract which regulates me to work at least five years before I leave.
If I leave earlier even several months, I must pay the University thirty th
ousand RMB.
Do you think that I should be punished because I don't want to be a faithles
s man? If you issued the visa to one man who disobeys the contract, why not
give me?
My advisor encourages me to apply Baylor.
How much did you earn?
About four thousand RMB per month. Because the program I worked is supported
by a pharmaceutical company. And this program is to test a new drug's pharm
acology effect. So the researchers have additional bonus and subsidy from th
at company except the salary.
(If this drug is permit to enter the market, the profits will far exceed th
e salary they pay me.)
I worked there not for the money. At that time, my advisor invited me to con
tinue the research in his lab. And I also didn't want to sign a contract.
When I graduated, some company gave me the offers. And the salary is about f
ive thousand RMB. You know, I did pat-time job in Bayer when I was a student
. If I like, I have ample chance to enter there
. **** What are you doing recently?
What are you responsible for in your present post?
Research on G-protein coupled receptors. It is responsible for the signal tr
ansducation.
V: Will you change your major in U.S?
M: Definitely not. During my undergraduate study I have been very interested
in my major. Besides, Cardiovascular Sciences is very promising in China an
d it has a bigger market in China than in U.S. because the population is lar
ger than US.I believe that I will have a better chance to have a bright futu
re.
5) When/where did you get your BS?
I got my BS from Peking university last July. RA in the department of Pharma
cology.
6) Have you any scholarship?
Yes. I was honored full financial support incluing a tuition waiver and year
ly scholarship of twenty thousand dollars. That is indicated in the I-20 for
m.
15) Give me three reasons that you will come back to China?
It is much easier to find a position in China while holding a PHD of USA. Yo
u know an American degree is very helpful now in China. I have an agreement
with professor Cheng jing. I will come back to his lab. He promise that I wi
ll share the stock of his company, if I am back.( In details, seventy five m
illion patients have diseases related to cardiovascular disease in US, and m
any of them died in 1999. There are three times more people dying of cardiov
ascular disease, such as Cardio failure and stoke, in China than in US. If I
succeed in developing the safe and effective cardiovascular drugs, I will e
arn more money in China. Then why I don't come back china to begin my splend
id personal career?)
If I come back to china, I have much better chances. Since china is underdev
eloped, it leaves much more space for people, especially for High-tech such
as Bio-pharmaceutic to develop. You know china, government wants to develop
several new drugs and own the patent.
Third, I was born in china and grew in china. I am custom of the situation o
f china. And I have many friends, classmates and most important my parents i
n china. The culture background can make me live an easy and comfortable lif
e in china.
16) Can you explain why 90% Chinese students didn't come back?
** Really? Maybe everyone has the special reason for staying where he stays?
However, I will come back to China to pursue my dream and ambition, that is:
a successful self-achievement, a decent life. you know, my only purpose to
go to US is to study.
Nowadays in china ,its economics become better and better. As I know, during
the recent years more and more students come back after they finished their
study. They also gain great success and respect. They are invited to be the
director of University lab or honor position in the company. For example, F
u xingyuan, the professor of Yale, now is in the Tsinghua University. Chengj
ing , the former Chief Technical Officer at AVIVA Biosciences Corp., San Die
go, USA.
What you have said is only the past fact. As I have said, there are stronger
more persuasive reasons for me to return to China to pursue my dream and am
bition, that is: a successful self-achievement, a meaningful career and a de
cent life, which is very difficult for a foreigner in USA. I can promise you
that even 99% Chinese student choose to stay in USA, I will not, because of
the splendid future prospective career that are waiting for me in China. It
is unfair for me not to believe me simply because of the offence committed
by others, because it deprived my right for a fair interview, which would gi
ve my particular situation a reasonable judgment. So, would you please consi
der my application again carefully?
For me, I will definitely come back, to begin my career.
**** Can you promise that you will not be attracted?
of course not. China is my home.
26. Why do you want to pursue a doctor's degree?
Because I love biomedical sciences. In order to satisfy my keen interest and
realize my dream and broaden my knowledge and skills, I need systematic tra
ining at a more advanced level.
4. Why do you want to get phd after you worked?
20) Why do you want to pursue a doctor's degree?
I realized that undertaking the research offers many challenges, and it is n
ecessary to expand my knowledge in Biomedical Sciences. . The development of
understanding the Cardiovascular sciences requires a deep going approach to
training and experiment.
I think a Ph.D is necessary for me to realize my career. In order to satisfy
my keen interest and broaden my knowledge and skills, I need systematic tra
ining at a more advanced level.
** My experience tells me. What I have learned needs updated. And if you wan
t to be a professor in China and do some scientific research, it is essentia
l to hold a PHD degree first.
13) How do you know this Univ.?
Its good reputation.
20. How do you know this University?
I got to know the University of Baylor from my advisor, Professor Lin Zhi Bi
n
17) Why do you choose (go to) this Univ. (school)?
my advisor in Peking University gave lecture there. So he knew many professo
rs of Baylor. He suggested me that if I want to further my graduate study,
I could consider Baylor as one of the good choices.
In fact is one of the best Medical Schools in American, even in the world. i
t plays a pioneer role in Cardiovascular Sciences.
There is an international group of scientists with many different perspectiv
es on education and research in the biomedical sciences. Baylor provides exc
eptional educational breadth for today's graduate students. And I am also at
tracted by the rich achievements of the past, the exciting science, the live
ly people, and the enormous beauty of the campus. Here, graduate students ca
n mingle with the world's top scientists at meetings and courses. (I will be
immersed in academic atmosphere of research, as I spent most of my time lea
rning about theoretic, doing research and writing about my findings. This ro
le is ideal since my personal goal is to gain aboard overview of biomedical
sciences. In such an environment with a tremendous degree of freedom, flexib
le hours and personal direction, I will essentially lead the life of a scien
tist.)
18) Why do you like your major?
Why do you want to study this major?
More individuals die of cardiovascular disease than any other. In order to a
pproach treatment in an efficient way, a thorough understanding of the cardi
ovascular system from structural, biochemical, biophysical and molecular per
spectives is necessary. The experiment was terrific for me since it served t
o demystify the activities within the practice. The breadth of Cardiovascula
r Sciences provides diverse research opportunities for students. Exciting op
portunities exist in this field!
19) Why do you want to study in USA?
Why do you choose US while not Japan or Canada?
Why are you going to USA?
because of the pioneering role USA playing in science, engineering and educa
tion, a Ph.D. degree issued by famous USA University is highly respected in
China, not only in China, but all over the world. USA has the most advanced
technology and the most perfect education system and the newest trend. And B
aylor provides me full financial aid.(I have strong belief that the one who
want to be successful, he must have passion, passion to devote himself to t
he project that he likes, loves, and works on, and the most important he mus
t have the strong background and he must grasp the key point. So I think tha
t to pursue PH.D. in USA is the best way to fulfill it. The program of the G
raduate Education of Baylor has the broad interest that can fit me very well
. There are good atmosphere of learning and the excellent professors and the
excellent students.)
21) Why do you receive financial aid from this Univ.?
