1. What will you study in the United States?
I will study Molecular Spectroscopy for my PhD degree in Princeton Universit
y.
2. What is your major? In what aspect of your major will you study?
My major is Physical Chemistry. And I will study in Molecular Spectroscopy a
spect.
3. Say something about your major.
The purpose of Molecular Spectroscopy is to explore the quantum states of mo
lecules. After knowing the quantum states people can do many things. For exa
mple people can control
chemical reactions. That's one of the dreams people want to realize.
4. What will you do in USA?
I will study for my PhD at Princeton University.
5. When and where did you get your BS/MS?
I got my BS degree from Tsinghua University in 1996 and MS degree in 1999, a
lso from Tsinghua University.
6. What and where are you studying now?
Now I am a teacher of Physics Department Tsinghua University. My research fi
eld is Molecular Spectroscopy.
7. How long will you study in USA?
About 5 years. It will take 5 to 6 years for me to get my PhD degree.
8. Have you any scholarship?
Yes, the Graduate School gave me a fellowship offer.
9. What do you want to study in USA?
I will study Molecular Spectroscopy for my PhD in USA.
10. What did you do with your work for MS?
I took 16 courses and did some theoretical calculation on resonant tunneling
model and solid-state physics.
11. What is your purpose for the visa?
I apply the visa for my PhD studying.
12. What is your academic background?
I graduated from Physics Department of Tsinghua University with BS in 1996 a
nd MS in 1999. Then I became a faculty of Physics Department of Tsinghua Uni
versity. My major is Molecular Spectroscopy.
13. What do you know about this University?
How did you know this University?
From my middle school English teacher, I knew this university the first time
. I like Princeton Univ. Princeton is just the place for studying. Princeton
has very good research programs and beautiful campus. Einstein lived his la
ter half life there.
14. What is your plan? What will you do after graduation?
I have worked in Tsinghua in the past three years. I am very interested in s
cientific research. So after graduation I will come back to Tsinghua to find
a faculty position.
15. Why do you not plan to get PhD in China?
Why do you want to study in USA?
Two reasons. In my research area Princeton University is in the lead positio
n in the world. Next, the Graduate Education in US is more regular than in C
hina.
16. Give me three reasons that you will come back to China?
First, I love Tsinghua. After my graduation I want to do some contributions
for Tsinghua.
Second, the Princeton PhD will help me compete the faculty position in Tsing
hua.
Third, I must take care my parents when they are old.
Fourth, It will be much easier for me to obtain success in China than in US,
considering my age.
17. Can you explain why 90% Chinese students didn't come back?
I think those students have their own reasons. Now China is becoming better
and better. I believe more and more Chinese students will come back in the f
uture.
18. Why do you choose this University?
Princeton has not only very deep academic traditions but frontier research p
rograms. These attract me. I also like the beautiful place.
19. Why do you like your major?
I love scientific research. My major is very important. It tells people the
knowledge of molecules. During the past three years I have worked on Molecul
ar Spectroscopy and I find it's interesting.
20. Why do you want to pursue a doctor's degree?
I want to be a professor. PhD is a necessary condition of professor in the f
uture. Princeton PhD will help me achieve my academic goal in Tsinghua Unive
rsity.
21. Why do you receive the financial aid from this University?
Why the University gives you this scholarship?
According my excellent academic experience and future promise as a scholar P
rinceton University honored this Fellowship to me.
22. What is the difficult class you have had?
Maybe Quantum Mechanics, it's hard to understand.
23. Do you want your wife§ to go with you?
Yes.
24. Why do you change your major?
In the past three years I did my research work on Molecular Spectroscopy. Mo
lecular Spectroscopy belongs to Physics department in China but to Chemistry
department in US.
25. What's the difference between your major now and the major in USA?
In Tsinghua University I am working on frequency modulation absorption spect
roscopy. In Princeton I will do research about cavity ring down spectrometer
. Both of them belong to Molecular Spectroscopy.
26. How long will your wife stay with you?
My wife will stay with me till my graduation.
27. From where will you get the financial support for your wife?
We will live on my scholarship and our savings. Do you want to see our savin
g cards?
28. What will she do in USA?
We will live together.
