98年F1签证实录1



Today I went to the US ambassay to apply for the visa.Unfortunately
 I fail to get what I want. I just to postthis article to help the guys who 
will go to ambassay toapply for the visa.

The officer is very unfriendly from the beginning of theinterview. He
 try find something wrong in my materials toreject me. First he asked
 me to submit some materialsfrom the University. Because different 
items of thematerials needed by the interview I put these materialsin
 different envelops that make convinience to get theright materials I 
want, maybe my action is not so quickthe officer asked me: Can you
 not understand me? Why notfollow my directions? No other choice I
 just said I am sorry

Then after he read the materials(no problems) he asked me to
 submitmy transcript,it is also no problems.

He continued asking me to submit my test scores. I just did what he
said. Because I have put all my degree certification and diploma on
the window he didn't ask me to submit these things. I thought there
was nothing I can submit. I don't know what is the result.

He then asked me why I want to go to US to pursue my Ph.d. I told 
him because the school is a first class school and the major is also
very good. I just want to study the advanced technology in US.

He then asked me what I will do after I finish my Ph.D in US. I just
told him I will come back to be a professor in the University.

After all this passed the officer have a thought for a while and then
said I am sorry I cannot give you the visa because I don't believe you
will come back after you finish your ph.D, which means you have the
immigration tendency.

I said you have no reason to reject me. He said he cannot believe
 mejust due to my word that I will come back after my ph.D study.

At that time I have no word to say, just one word: shit!!!.

Who have the same experience maybe can give me some good
 advice.To those who wil go to apply for visa: be careful and good
 luck to you. 

F1被拒

Since the statistics shows only 5-10%Chinese students returned 
China aftergraduation,I think the officer doesn't believe you'll come
 back very much.The best way is to avoid this kind of question. If you
 don't have a popularmajor, you can reply the job opportunity is few
 in US, you have to come back.If you held a popular major, you can
 reply" it's to be determined", or "Iwill think of it at that time",etc. Only 
a suggestion.

签证好消息

现在签证形式还好. PKU化学系有俩大虾轻松过关. 其中一人问题
如下:
1)Which university are you from?
2)Which univ. will you go?
3)...........(easy questions)4)Why your mathematics scores are higher
 than your chemistry scores?
(签政官用中文问这问题, 告诉他可用中文reply. 但他还是用english)

另一人有一较难问题是: Why you are admitted to Upenn given that
 your undergraduate scores are not good enough?

总结: 鬼子对成绩单较重视. 老实认真回答为妙.


今天签证真不容易啊！

总体来说，各种签证10％成功率吧。
F1 肯定高些。本人拿了牛校的全奖和那位去 Yale 的虽然先后通过
，也 是出了一身冷汗换来的。 紧随我两之后的女孩运气也不错，
签到了。
在我三的前头，F1 被据得一塌糊涂，不管什么全奖。我三是上午
最后三 个签F1 的，彼此紧握双手以示庆贺。
成功来之不易啊！TMD 的鬼子都疯狂 了。
不过，拿牛校全奖的大虾不要被现场 气氛吓倒，俺三人都问的很
少问题。
材料只拿了GRE 原件看，其他的都扔窗 口没看。

今日签证经历

详细说说今天的情况。
gerry今天5:06am到的使馆，等到7:00am拿到了21号。本以为9点
前就能搞定呢。
没想到8点进使馆，等到9:10才有签证官来。我是大约9:30签的。
给我签的是个韩国人。问的问题比较简单。
1是你什么时候拿到学士学位。
2是你去读什么学位。
3是你拿到Ph.D.之后的计划。
4是为什么你喜欢Computer Science.然后就pass了。本来还怕问
到我哥在米国什么的，也没问。
中间有点小插曲。
我今天是和同班的一个同学一起去的。他就排在我前面，同一个签
证官。
所以问到3的时候，我刚刚说‘I'll come back to China...’她就打断
我说'Oh. That man...What's his name...'(翻她刚签过的材料)Me: 
'YGW? Oh, he is my classmate';She: 'En. YGW. He is your
 classmate?'Me: 'Yeah.'(猜到她要说什么了，心里不由的暗骂
YGW，排在我前面给我找麻烦)She: 'He also said he would come
 back.'Me:(不出所料) 'Oh, I believe he will:) and me too:).'She: 'What 
will you do then?'Me: 'I wish I could become a professsor in Tsinghua
 University. InComputer Science Department, of course:)'She: 'He 
also said he would be a professor.'Me:(暗骂YGW) 'Oh, Tsinghua is
 a big University and CS Dept. is one ofthe biggest Dept. I believe
 they would have room for us two:)'She smiled and passed this
 question.她问4的时候我就说:'Because in my early ages I liked
 computer gamesvery much:)'然后就go to window 6 了。
其实有点瞎答了。因为一开始她看了我的T，G分数就说'You got
 good scores'我说了'Thank you'之后就比较放松了，觉得没什么
问题。而且吗...这个韩国美眉长的满漂亮的。gerry一见到漂亮美
眉就脑子也好用了，嘴皮子也灵活了:)回答问题的时候一直在
smiling:)

今天其他签证的情况也都不错。F1好象全签了。F2成功率在
70%以上。
黄毛签证官锯的比较多。不过F1他也都给pass了。

我感觉只要放松，回答问题不必长篇大论。签证官说话并不快，
听的也挺清楚。

O:... your GRE score?
M:okay.(bring him it)O:good score (bring it back to me)M:yes
.O:university of Iowa...which university ... your undergraduate...
M:tsinghua University.O:what major?
M:CS.O:will u come back to china?
M:yes.O:welcome to the united states of america.M:thank u
 very much!
O:go to window6旁边其它窗口净是被拒的，可怜。



There are three officials today, two white men and a asian girl
who may be the Korean girl.

The girl interviewed me.

She: Why you choose the Univ. of XXXX?
Me : Because in the field that I concentrate, the Univ. of XXXX is
 very strong. and..

She interupted me.

She: How do you know?
Me(go on): because there are more than 40 prof. and Associate 
prof. in its dept. of XXX.

She looked up my transcript very very carefully.

She: Why you did not do well in the course XXX?
Me:Because it is not often used in my field.(my heart speed up)

She:What will you do after get PH.D?
Me: I will come back and find a teaching or reaserch position in
 a univ. .

Her answer was dramatic.

She: I wouldn't believe you.I am about to shout " why?".She 
continued" please wait at window 6."I replaced 'why' with 'thank
 you".


我认识一人，签CORNELL的物理全奖，被残酷拒签。而且只
问了一个问题，WHAT IS YOURPLAN AFTER YOU GET PHD
 DEGREE？他的回答是：I WILL RETURN TO BE A
 PROFESSOR！



对BBS上的签证有关文章作了仔细阅读后，选定了一个好日子，
6 月11日，周三去ppppp挝签证。因为，周四只签拒签再签的，
而周一，周五的外地来京签证人数可能较多。

早8：00到达使馆，排了一会儿队在使馆外一号窗口领到169号，
9：30 分左右进入使馆，在零号窗口交护照，I－20表，银行收据
和156表11：20左右签证，是一棕色头发，中年白人男子

Me: hello, this is my materials.( give all my materials to him. the
 windowglasses is just like that of the bank)He: What's your name?
Me: XXX (he found my passport and look)He: What's your Major?
Me: Electrical Engineering.He: Where?
Me: XXX University. ( A white girl came to talk to him, continued for
 a while)He: (finish talking then read my I-20 carefully, I guess he's 
calculationand judging) your undergraduate major?
Me: Electrical Engineering.He school?
Me: Tsinghua University.He: What's your plan after your graduation?
Me; I will be happy off, and I will come back to China to united with
 my family and my parents. In career, I will continue my res( I stoped
because I found he intended to ask me question.He: Will your 
husband stay in china while you study in America for 5 years?

Me: He will have chances to visit the state. He's work in XXX.
( Actrully I don't know if people of the XXX company will have
 chance to the state. XXX is a big company. But I said with
 confidenc.)He: OK. I issue you the visa.Me: Thank you.

当天，绝大部分全奖签过。但有一Gorgia Univ.的全奖被据。
他本科毕业后工作一年，被问到salary, 答约400元每月。只问了
他两个问题。
有一F2，在出示了她先生给她写的300多封信后，在使馆外的三
号窗口顺利签过。
探亲的过的拒的都有。
总之，全奖的较好签，只要在签证官前坚信自己会回国，态度自
信，回答可信，出些小错也没关系。祝后来者好运！



Ican是上周五被台湾阿姨（今天亲耳听其对老太太和孙孙说'
我给你们签了，但不要叫我阿姨，我不是你的阿姨',TMD老子就
是自降一辈也叫)kill的。
Reason是本科成绩不好和口语不好。（其实不然）今天紧张半
天，而用一分钟就搞定了，没什么好讲。忠告大家：没有他们
非给签的F-1application, 所以充分准备，（不要学ICAN和
RAVINE），争取一签成功。?
RAVINE历经痛苦，今天用了十多分钟驳倒一签锯的理由：
移民倾向。他有时间一定会POST担请到SMTH查看。



Following is a skit about my visa application this morning.Hope
 it can also help you.

今天是六月十日，早晨5点15起床。跑到同班同学“H”那，发现
他瞪着大眼躺在床上，原来他比我醒的还早。

5:30来到北大南门路边等车。夏利一辆接一辆，可足等了五分钟
才等到一辆黄面的。跳上车，面的一路狂奔，6:05来到米国大使
馆，却发现已经有100多人了。

7:00开始发号，7:40领到116号。上面写着约9:00进大使馆。于
是和H租了两把小凳子，一边喝点饮料，吃点面包，一边练两句
口语。8:10发现已经没有人再排队领号了。8:40问门前警卫叫到
多少号了，发现已经130号了。我和H急忙冲进大使馆，按路标来
到签证处，交了OF－156表，I－20，护照，申请费收据，领到
一块黑色塑料牌。签证处大厅里申请者每十人为一组，持同种颜
色的塑料牌，由一个签证官负责。

9:00米国4号，韩国3号，米国5号分别开始处理签证。米国四号
是个老头，第一个申请者是个女学生，被问了约3分钟后得到签证
。接着又pass了几个学生和探亲的老头老太。看来今天形势不错
，就是有点慢，于是乎让H帮我拿一下包，我溜出去方便了一下
。发现大使馆里的厕所不怎么样。

9:50我们一组很不幸的分到了韩国(K)3号的窗口。H第一个签，问
的话在后面听的不太清楚，只见k开始绷着脸，忽然笑的很灿烂，
接着H一声"Thank you"就通过了。

接着k叫了我的名字，我来到3号窗口，交了录取通知书，GRE，
TOEFL 成绩。然后站在那里等待k问话。

k: You will go to Y Univ?
Me:Yes.

k: Y Univ is terrible.(然后她就不停的说terrible大概4，5次，弄的
我莫名奇妙。)

Me: Why?
(没有回答)

Me: I think Y Univ is one of the best Univs in the world.(k摇了摇头
，好象不太赞同。我昨天听说她是UPENN毕业的)


k: What subject will you do in physics?
Me: Condensed Matter Physics.

k: Also condensed matter physics?
(我意识到H肯定也说自己要做condensed matter)

Me: Yes, I will study the optical properties of Diluted Magnetic
Semiconductors. To do some basic research on solid state
 physics.

k: Why the univ give you funding?
(funding是什么东东？脑筋急转弯，快！啊，她是指financial 
aids吧)

Me: Because my undergraduate academic performance is
 very excellent.(反正她没看我成绩单，就吹一吹牛吧。)

(k满脸灿烂的笑问)k: Very Excellent?

(糟糕，牛皮吹大了，要是她看了成绩单就漏底了，不过只得
硬着头皮上了)Me: You can say that.

(看我的GRE成绩，并在OF－156上誊写，有拿起了Y给我的录
取信仔细的看－－我很高兴，因为录取信上可把我吹捧了一番
，说我被录取是因为my promise asa scientist and scholar，果
然，k看完后就开始在OF－156上划圈了。正在我一阵狂喜时，
k突然问到)k: Do you know Mr. (H)？

(倒什么乱！)

Me: Yes, he is my classmate.

k: Who is "moring"?
(没听懂，什么moring, morning, ..%@^&@!)

Me: Moring? (满脸疑惑的)

k: Who is better?
Me: It's hard to compare. (满脸堆笑的)

k: Ok, wait at window No. 6 (满脸笑容的把录取信，G，T 及塑
料牌给我)Me: Thank you.

(这麽多问题，其实只有一分钟左右)



9:55在No.6 排对, 10:30才领到领visa的单子。Window 6的队伍
很长，一直排到签证大厅门外。今天签证形势很好，总体(包括
F-1, ...)大概被据概率3/10. F-1全奖几乎都过了，MBA半奖有一
个签过，两个被据，都是在米国4号。

注意：最好不要和同班同学或同去一个学校的同学一起去签，因
为这会给鬼子向你提很不好回答的问题的机会。另外，你一般实
入大使馆的时间比号上说的时间要早，所以不要太晚再去。(K喜
欢先签F－1，在我门一组中，我是第三个领到牌的，H是第八个
领到牌的，但K先叫了H，又叫了我。米国4号也可能如此，但米
国5号是按照排队的顺序作曲手指状叫人的。)



早上7:20，T和M从清华出发，骑车到南门，坐375小巴到西直门
，坐地铁到前门，走到公安局。约8:35，取到护照，打的到使馆
约9:00，领到205，206号。写明10:00进入使馆。

闲逛一阵，还不到十点就被叫了进去，排在0号窗口前等待换牌。
这时候队伍动的很慢，半天才签一个。等了很久，领到浅绿色牌。
（好象中间有人领到的是白牌，不知道有何含义没有。）这时候
好象只有3，5窗口有人，大概3号是韩国MM，4号窗口开始有人
，后来又没有了。又等了一会，忽然增加了一个签证官在2号窗
口，是一个秃头的微胖外国男子，好象不会汉语，旁边有一个翻
译。
他把拿浅绿色牌的队叫了过去。（越过了左边的好几队），看来
他就是在吃饭以前来帮忙的，大家都窃喜起来。

果然这位签证官以半分钟一个的速度签，而且不管探亲还是读书
都很快。我听见翻译问前面一个中年妇女“你一定要去（看你女儿
）么？”答曰“一定要去”，于是就go to window 6了。

很快到了Tom, 清华计算机本科男生，去Syracuse University.
Official: "So..uh, u r going to Syracuse?"T: "yes."O: "The
 Telecommunication dept?"T: "Oh no. I applied for two programs
 in Syracuse and bothadmitted me. The I20 showed the first one
, but i'm goingto the second one: Dept of computer and Infomation
 Sciencefor a PhD Degree."O: "Ok, thank you. Go to window 6
."T: "Thank you."

下面到了moira,清华计算机本科女生，去Princeton University.
M欲将材料塞进窗口。
O: "Wait a moment please."(looking at the I20)M: "OK."O: "....
computer science, huh?"M: "yes."O: "What is DOS?"M: "disk
 operating system."O: "Enjoy your life in United States."M: "thank
 you."O: "Go to window 6 please. Don't forget ur materials."M匆
忙将窗口的材料拿出，O帮忙把卡在中间的推了出来。
O: "....computer science, huh?"M: "yes."O: "What is DOS?"M: 
"disk operating system."O: "Enjoy your life in United States."M: 
"thank you."O: "Go to window 6 please. Don't forget ur materials
."M匆忙将窗口的材料拿出，O帮忙把卡在中间的推了出来。

后面的学生也大同小异，有被问biophysics是干什么的，有被问
电压，电流，功率的单位是什么的。估计他就对每种专业准备
了一两个问题。

所有带去的材料：本科成绩，录取通知，TG成绩，全都没有看。
出来使馆，是11:10。

结论：靠近吃午饭的时候去，果然很不错！
